The days may be numbered for a top California wildlife official who sparked a controversy by shooting and killing a mountain lion in Idaho.

Escalating a battle between hunters and animal welfare groups -- a conflict that could result in major changes to California's endangered species and hunting policies -- 40 Democratic state Assembly members Friday sent a letter to Dan Richards, president of the California Fish and Game Commission, demanding that he resign.

The firestorm began after a hunting newspaper recently published a photo of Richards, a Republican from San Bernardino and outspoken trophy hunter, holding a dead mountain lion he shot at the Flying B Ranch in northern Idaho earlier this year.

Mountain lion hunting in California was first banned by Gov. Ronald Reagan in 1972 in five-year increments. It was outlawed permanently when California voters passed Proposition 117 in 1990.

In Idaho, however, hunting mountain lions is legal.

Hunting groups have rallied to Richards' defense. But critics, led by the Humane Society of the United States, argue that Richards showed bad judgment and mocked the will of California voters.

"Your actions raise serious questions about whether you respect the laws of the people of California and whether you are fit to adequately enforce those laws," the letter from the Assembly Democrats said.

It closed with an ominous tone: "We hope that you decide to put the people of California and

their collective values first and that this unfortunate incident does not continue to distract the work of the Legislature."

Under state law, any fish and game commissioner can be removed by a simple majority vote in both houses of the state Legislature.

With 40 of the 80 members of the Assembly calling for Richards to resign, his future on the commission appears to be in serious jeopardy. A similar letter is now circulating in the state Senate, where Democrats hold 25 of the 40 seats.

Richards did not return calls seeking comment.

Assemblyman Ben Hueso, D-San Diego, wrote the Assembly letter and organized the signature gathering. His staff said that more than 40 members would have signed, but Hueso decided to stop at 40. There are 52 Democrats in the 80-member Assembly.

"I have received an outpouring of support from my constituents to remove the commissioner from his position," Hueso said. "This incident has ignited such an uproar in communities across the state, I am concerned that if Commissioner Richards were to remain on the commission, it would compromise the reputation and ability of the California Fish and Game Commission to continue its good work in the future."

Hueso's staff said if Richards does not resign, the assemblyman will likely introduce a resolution to force his removal.

The controversy has prompted an outpouring of support for Richards from hunting and fishing groups, many of which see Richards as the most reliable vote for their issues.

"If he would have shot that mountain lion in California, he would have been thumbing his nose at the voters of California," said Bill Gaines, president of the California Outdoor Heritage Alliance, a hunting advocacy group. "We would have called for his resignation.

"But for him to do it legally in another state, a state that bases their mountain lion management on science -- and not emotions like we have here in California -- and to be condemned for it, we just flat-out disagree with that."

Some hunting and fishing groups are urging their members to turn out en masse at the next Fish and Game Commission meeting, which will be held March 7 in Riverside.

The stakes are high. The five-member commission not only decides which species to list as endangered, it also sets policies on everything from hunting to California's new system of "marine protected areas," which ban fishing in areas off the coast.

If Richards, who was appointed to the five-member commission by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, resigns or is removed from the panel, his replacement would be named by Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown. And that's a move that for the first time could give the commission a majority of members who tend to support the priorities of environmental groups. Currently, the commission is split 2-2, with Commissioner Richard Rogers often casting the swing vote.

Hanging in the balance in the next year or two: issues such as whether to expand the number of black bears that can be killed every year by California hunters, whether to ban lead shot or whether to offer state endangered-species protections to wolves.

If Richards leaves, the vice president of the commission, Mike Sutton, would become president. Sutton is a former national park ranger and biologist who works at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

"There's a lot at stake," said Jennifer Fearing, state director of the Humane Society of the United States.

Gaines, the hunting advocate, agreed.

"We're very well aware that this is a key seat, as are the animal rights groups," he said. "There's only five votes, so if you get three, you win."

MO: Can you tell us about your business tactic of being early adopters of Amazon?s KOLL and adhering to Amazon?s strict exclusivity guidelines by taking yourself off of the other platforms?

Karen: In Dec. 2011, Amazon introduced the Kindle Owner?s Lending Library (KOLL) for authors to enroll in. The program allows Amazon Prime members to borrow for free with no due date one book per month, to watch unlimited movies and TV shows, and enjoy free shipping of orders. The cost for this membership is $79 per year. Right now, this program is only open to US citizens, but hopefully they will open it up to Canadians and other countries. What is so attractive about the KOLL is that Amazon has allotted $500,000 (for Dec.) and $700,000 (for Jan) to distribute to all authors who are enrolled in the program. Any Amazon Prime member who downloads a book from the KOLL gets to borrow it for free, however, Amazon pays the author a royalty (almost as high as the regular royalty). This is good news for the author and the members, however, the drawback of the program is that Amazon requires you to exclusively sell your ebook on their platform only. Viewing it more broadly, this exclusivity clause hurts readers in general who may want to download the author?s book from other platforms such as the Apple iBookstore, Nook Store or KOBO for example. Competitors such as Barnes & Noble are lashing out at Amazon for this practice that they deem unfair and the ebook battle continues! Even though we like to play nicely in the sandbox with everyone, we decided to try out the program and after our three month exclusivity trial is over will weigh the benefits and make a decision as to whether to stay enrolled, or go back to distributing on all platforms. So far, our decision seems to be paying off as sales have increased but it is too soon to tell whether they will eclipse aggregated sales on all platforms.

MO: What three destinations are on the top of your travel wish list?

Karen: Portugal, Turkey and Morocco

MO: You?ve had so many professional successes, which one has been the most meaningful to you?

Karen: I feel fortunate to have been led down the path to figuring out how to make a living as I get to pursue all of my loves: entrepreneurship + technology + writing + travel, and sharing it with family and friends. STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Sweden's newborn princess and future monarch has a name: Estelle Silvia Ewa Mary.

King Carl XVI Gustaf announced his granddaughter's name, and said the baby girl, who was born Thursday to Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, will receive the title Duchess of Ostergotland, a province in southeast Sweden.

As Victoria's first-born child, she is second in line to the throne.

Estelle, a name of French origin, is unusual in Sweden and took royal watchers by surprise, though it isn't unprecedented in the royal family, which has French roots. Estelle was the name of the American-born wife of the king's godfather, Count Folke Bernadotte, a U.N. mediator in the Israeli-Arab conflict who was assassinated in Jerusalem in 1948.

Silvia is the name of Victoria's mother and Ewa is Daniel's mother's name.

Mary is not common in the Swedish royal family, but it's the name of Denmark's Australian-born crown princess.

The king didn't explain the reasoning behind the names.

"We have now been given a little Princess Estelle in Sweden and we are all, particularly me and the family, very, very happy and joyful for that," he said.

Victoria and Daniel returned to their lakeside palace Thursday and have not appeared in public with the child.

The court's Mistress of the Robes, Alice Trolle-Wachtmeister, described the newborn princess as a "spitting image" of her mother Victoria.

Sweden's monarch is primarily a figurehead, representing the country as the head of state but with powers limited to ceremonial functions.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Rachel Crow was a tearful runner-up on "The X Factor," but she's a winner now.

The 14-year-old singer has signed a series deal with the Nickelodeon channel and a recording contract with Sony's Columbia Records-Syco.

Nickelodeon said Wednesday its agreement with Crow includes development of a comedy series for the teenager. She'll also have a recurring role in Nickelodeon's new program, "Fred: The Show."

Crow's recording deal puts her in business with "X Factor" creator Simon Cowell's Syco enterprise.

The big-voiced teenager made a dramatic exit from "X Factor" last December: Crow collapsed onstage after she was voted off by viewers.

It's called horticultural therapy. And some doctors, psychologists and occupational therapists are now at work to test whether building, planting, and harvesting a garden can be a therapeutic process in its own right.

Much of the science behind just how gardening affects the mind and brain still remains a mystery. What scientists do know is that gardening reduces stress and calms the nerves. It decreases cortisol, a hormone that plays a role in stress response. So what about the biological mechanism behind mental disorders? That's a bit tougher.

Variables in the environment ? such as climate, location, diet and genetics ? have complicated some of the early research on horticultural therapy. So to pinpoint a causal relationship between gardening and mental rehabilitation, researchers have to use a balance of qualitative and quantitative studies, according to Elizabeth Diehl, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Therapeutic Horticulture.

A 2011 study at a juvenile rehabilitation center in southwestern Ohio with a gardening program showed that horticulture therapy helped the kids see themselves in a more positive light and helped them better manage their emotional and behavioral problems. And most of the kids said they would continue gardening after the program, according to the findings in the Journal of Therapeutic Horticulture.

Horticulture therapy dates to Socrates, but it didn't become a scientific pursuit until the 18^th century. That's when Benjamin Rush, a psychiatrist and Declaration of Independence cosignatory, began documenting how gardening benefited his mentally ill patients.

Social scientists have also been looking at gardens built by and for the homeless, ex-convicts on probation and hospital patients. The results of early studies suggest they have a positive impact. Most people tend to not revert back to bad behavior and many make changes in their lives for the better, the studies show.

For now, that evidence seems to be enough to fuel the burgeoning field ? programs like a camp for troubled teens in Hawaii, called Pacific Quest. Program staff tell The Salt they believe the garden is a beneficial tool to emotionally engage the kids.

One 2007 study in the journal Neuroscience found a bacteria found in soil linked with increased serotonin production in the brain ? a sign that gardening could increase serotonin levels and improve depression.

For a few months, students ? many with psychological issues from trauma, adoption, depression ? band together and run a garden from the seed to the dinner plate. "They are introduced to the garden by eating the food planted by [a camper] who was in their shoes just a few months ago," Travis Slagle, a Horticultural Therapy Association member and land supervisor for Pacific Quest, tells The Salt. "That builds their curiosity."

Horticulture therapy offers at least one big advantage for the kids: The garden setting never changes. This gives them ample time to connect with their surroundings and feel at home.

"With the garden, you're living in a place and learning about the community and building a community," he says. That stable environment can help the kids let their guard down.

Students build the garden beds, plant the seeds, care for the seedlings and cook the food ? all with minimal help from the staff. The teens learn how to problem solve on their own, as well. Slagle says they build rock walls for support and plant companion plants for certain veggies or fruit.

"They can see the parallel of the garden and relate it to their own lives," he says. "It provides ways to engage in conversation and life lessons." The kids, who meet with counselors and therapists regularly throughout the process, are learning to prepare for the moment but also to plan for the future, he says. Doing both at the same time requires maturity, and wisdom and that's something the garden brings out, he says.

The kids take the extra passion fruit, kale, onions, carrots, beets, bananas, and pineapples to the local farmer's market to sell. The profit is donated to a local charity. "The garden allows them to recognize that it's not something that's just going to benefit themselves," he says. "It teaches that in an experiential way."

"Rejection is such a powerful experience for people," Eisenberger says. "If you ask people to think back about some of their earliest negative experiences, they will often be about rejection, about being picked last for a team or left out of some social group." People talk about hurt feelings and broken hearts, but Eisenberger realized they might be onto something when she and a colleague noticed how similar their images of brain activity looked in people who had experienced social rejection and others who had experienced physical pain. "We were sitting next to each other and noticed how similar the two brain images looked," she says.

That similarity has held up in later research. Physical pain and social pain are processed in some of the same regions of the brain. Physical pain has two aspects: the sensory experience of pain and the emotional component, in which your brain decides how negative or distressing the pain is. It is the latter that is shared with social pain, although some research has suggested that severe social rejection, like being dumped, can also be processed in the part of your brain that handles the sensory component of pain.

People who are more sensitive to physical pain are also more sensitive to social pain; they feel more rejected after completing a social exclusion task, in which the other two players in a computer version of catch refuse to share the ball. One study even found that people who took Tylenol for three weeks reported less hurt feelings than people who took a placebo. Even Eisenberger was surprised by that. "It follows in a logical way from the argument that the physical and social pain systems overlap, but it's still kind of hard to imagine," she says. "We take Tylenol for physical pain; it's not supposed to work on social pain."

Eisenberger does not recommend taking painkillers so you don't feel social pain. And, besides, there may be value to experiencing the pain of rejection. "I think it's probably there for a reasonto keep us connected to others," she says. "If we're constantly numbing the feeling of social rejection, are we going to be more likely do things that get us rejected, that alienate us?" There may be some cases where the social pain is too much, though; future research may look at whether it should sometimes be treated.

The research validates the hurt feelings of people who have been socially rejected, Eisenberger says. "We seem to hold physical pain in higher regard than social pain," she says. While bystanders understand that physical pain hurts and can be debilitating, the same empathy doesn't always extend to people feeling social pain. "The research is sort of validating. It suggests that there is something real about this experience of pain that we have following rejection and exclusion."
