Obama, Romney go tit-for-tat on who's out of touch

WASHINGTON (AP) ? If you haven't heard anyone label President Barack Obama or Republican rival Mitt Romney out of touch yet today, consider it a momentary lapse.

"Out of touch" is the go-to label of Campaign 2012. Both candidates are working overtime to firmly affix it to the other guy ? and to keep it from sticking to their own skin.

"Is he really that out of touch?" Romney asks of Obama.

"Romney can't hide his out-of-touch policies behind hypocritical rhetoric," Obama's own campaign counters.

The fearsome label packs a lot of punch in just three words: communicating that a candidate can't relate to voters, doesn't care about them and can't be counted on to represent their best interests.

It's a message that can be devastating to a candidate: Republican John McCain and Democrat John Kerry, the unsuccessful nominees of the past two presidential elections, both were cast by their opponents as privileged elites who couldn't relate to the concerns of ordinary Americans.

Remember McCain being pummeled for fumbling a question about how many houses he owned? Or Kerry catching grief for being photographed windsurfing, hardly the all-American pastime?

This year, with more than four months still to go until the election, the out-of-touch message is being chanted like a mantra by both sides.

Romney, with his vast wealth and some cringe-worthy sound bites, has proven more vulnerable on the issue.

A June survey by the Pew Research Center found that 59 percent of voters felt Obama connected better with ordinary Americans than did Romney, while 28 percent felt Romney did better. That was Obama's biggest advantage among a number of traits tested, including being willing to take a stand, ability to get things done, honesty and taking consistent positions.

It's about the same advantage that Obama held over McCain on the trait in June 2008.

Andrew Kohut, president of the Pew center, said avoiding the out-of-touch label is important because people "want a sense that the president is with them." He said the campaigns seem to be spending an unusual amount of time this year focusing on who's better connected to voters.

But Kohut cautions that relating to voters "is not the be-all and end-all" in evaluating presidential candidates: "There's also the performance dimension, which is far more important if you had to pick any one thing."

Still, in a race that appears likely to remain close to the end, both candidates are looking for any advantage, and they're engaged in daily combat over who's out-of-touch.

Why the repetition?

"There's lots of research that says that when an idea or a message is repeated, it's more likely to be accepted ? although if you repeat it too much, it will become stale," says William Benoit, an Ohio University expert on political rhetoric.

The challenge for the Obama and Romney teams, then, is to find fresh ways to deliver the same out-of-touch message. And they're getting pretty good at it: employing raised eyebrows, mockery, hyperbole, pre-emption and more to drive the idea home in ads, speeches, fundraising appeals and appearances by surrogates.

While Obama personally has personally steered clear of labeling Romney "out of touch," he conveys the same message with other words, often uttered with a tone of incredulity. Campaigning Tuesday in Atlanta, he said Romney's vision was that if "wealthy investors like him ... are doing well, then everybody else is automatically doing well." Noting that Romney's campaign had tried to draw a distinction between "outsourcing" jobs and "off-shoring" jobs to support U.S. exports, the president told his audience, "You cannot make this stuff up."

Vice President Joe Biden, for his part, likes to couple a soft intro with a sharp jab: He calls Romney a "fine man with a beautiful family" then adds; "I don't think he gets it."

Romney's tried a similar tactic, saying of Obama: "We have a president who I think is a nice guy, but he spent too much time at Harvard, perhaps, or maybe just not enough time working in the real world." (No mention of the fact that Romney has two Harvard degrees to Obama's one.)

Romney's team, meanwhile, has eagerly milked the president's comment that the private sector is "doing fine" as evidence that Obama doesn't understand the economic hardship still facing many Americans.

The president was "defining what it means to be detached and out of touch," says Romney.

His campaign loves to frame Obama's frequent appearances with celebrities as further evidence he's lost touch. After Obama attended a fundraiser whose hosts included Vogue editor Anna Wintour and actress Sarah Jessica Parker, Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus wrote that Obama was in a "Wintour Wonderland."

"Where would President Obama get an outrageous idea like 'the private sector is doing fine'?" Priebus asked. "Perhaps from one of his many star-studded fundraisers."

The Obama campaign has plenty of its own mocking rejoinders.

"Being called out of touch by a candidate who joked about being unemployed and said he likes to fire people is rich," tweeted campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt.

The Obama campaign's Lis Smith offered this tweet on Wednesday: "Free advice for (at)Mittromney's campaign: saying that Romney closed his Swiss Bank account in 2010 won't make him seem more in touch."

Surrogates and comedians, too, are looking to score out-of-touch touchdowns.

Stephen Colbert, making hay with Ann Romney's love of dressage, declared horse ballet "our new national pastime" and did his satirical part to give it the common touch by swilling a beer and waving a red foam No. 1 finger in the air.

Zynga reveals 'FarmVille 2,' new social gaming network

The company behind "FarmVille," revealed Tuesday that a?sequel?to its enormously popular Facebook game is in the works and that it is creating a social network of its very own to bring gamers together.

In San Francisco during an event at Zynga's headquarters, the company unveiled a host of new ?games and?also took the wraps off its Zynga With Friends network, which it?describes as "a?unified experience that will connect all players on any platform."

The event comes at a time when the company's?stock has?slid?well below its December 2011 $10 IPO price and as its Facebook user numbers have been declining.

But during Tuesday "Zynga Unleashed" event, Mark Pincus, founder and CEO of Zynga, said?the company was showing off "the products and technology that represent the next generation of Zynga."

"Our pipeline of new games represents more genres of play that expand our audience, more mobile ways to play and more dimensions of play that will deliver the next generation of fun and social," he said.?

The most important news from Tuesday's event was Zynga's revelation that it is trying to spread its wings and fly the Facebook coop ? to a degree. Zynga said it is working on its own Zynga With Friends network ? an attempt to bring all its players together under one umbrella, as well as?reduce its dependence on the social network giant.

The company said the?Zynga With Friends network?will connect gamers playing on Facebook, iOS, Android, Zynga.com and?elsewhere.?It's not clear when the network will officially launch, but officials said?Zynga with Friends will include a virtual?lobby where you can see what your friends are playing, the ability to?live?chat with other players, the ability to go?head-to-head in multiplayer matches, and a live "Social Stream" where you can get access items you need to advance your games.

New social network or not, the San Francisco company?is still well tied?to Facebook ? the place where hits like "FarmVille," "Texas HoldEm Poker" and "Mafia Wars" have taken?off. And Zynga announced that it is bringing a?variety?of new games to Facebook as well.

Zynga didn't reveal much about "FarmVille 2" other than to say it was "coming soon." But it is big news, considering that the first "FarmVille" launched back in 2009 and skyrocketed to popularity on Facebook. With age, however, it has bled users. According to AppData, it currently boasts?21.7 million monthly active users, down from some 60 million monthly active users at its peak.

On the heels of "FarmVille's" success, Zynga has kept a fresh flow of "Ville"-themed games coming ? i.e.?"CityVille" and "CastleVille." And on Tuesday the company outlined?two more games coming to the franchise. One is called simply "The Ville," and the other is called "ChefVille."

Zynga calls "The Ville" its "most social game to-date." According to a?press release, "The Ville" will have players build the (virtual)?home of their dreams. The release explains: "The more people you interact with the more happiness you obtain in the game. As you level up in the game you unlock new objects for your home, and by building relationships with other avatars you unlock new interactions."

That probably sounds very?familiar to anyone who has played one of the games from Electronic Arts'?long-running "Sims" franchise. But we'll see for sure Wednesday, when "The Ville" launches on Facebook (it's also coming "soon" to Zynga.com).

Meanwhile, in "ChefVille" players will create personalized?kitchens?and cook up a variety of?dishes (pizza,?steak Florentine, orange chicken, etc.). When you master a virtual?dish, you'll be sent an email containing?the recipe so you can?cook it?in your real-world?kitchen. Zynga says "ChefVille" is coming soon to both?Facebook and Zynga.com.

But the Ville franchise wasn't the only one to get new games.?Zynga also announced that its fifth game in the?"With Friends" series?(think "Words with Friends")?has launched on iOS devices today. The latest game is called "Matching With Friends," and is a social puzzle game in which players match color blocks on a game board (see trailer above).

Unfortunately for Zynga, the Unleashed event did not unleash a stock rally for the company.?Zynga shares closed 5 percent lower on Tuesday.

PUKHTUNKHWA TIMES: Pakistan: Micro-finance credit bureau

State Bank of Pakistan has been stressing the importance of micro-finance for the last few years. On Wednesday, the 20th June, 2012, it went a step further by setting up micro-finance-exclusive credit information bureau (MF-CIB) in its organisational structure to give a boost to the micro-finance sector. Highlighting the importance of this sector in Pakistan's economy, Governor, SBP, Yaseen Anwar stated that the bureau would help micro-finance banks and micro-finance institutions in developing a robust risk management system, which in turn would reduce the risk of multiple borrowings and loan defaults. As such, the MF-CIB would open access to credit for millions of potential poor borrowers and reduce the credit risk cost of the lenders, besides lowering the loan price for borrowers. At present, even the creditworthy borrowers of micro-finance institutions face difficulties in accessing larger loans due to non-availability of their history of past loans and timely repayments to a micro-finance institution. The MF-CIB could facilitate the "graduation" of such livelihood-based workers into small entrepreneurs. SBP, according to the Governor, had played a sterling role in the development of micro-finance sector as an alternative to conventional banking to serve the lower end of the market. Financial inclusion, which was a core component of SBP's financial sector development strategy, envisages transferring the financial market into an equitable system with efficient market-based financial services to the otherwise excluded - poor and marginalised - population, including women and young people. Pakistan had one of the lowest financial penetration levels in the world, with 56 percent adult population totally excluded, and another 32 percent informally served. We totally agree with the basic idea of State Bank establishing the MF-CIB but are also aware of its limitations. As in the case of existing credit bureau in the SBP, the new bureau would also certainly serve a very useful purpose by identifying the habitual loan defaulters in the micro-finance sector. The raising of red flag in these cases would not only help the micro-finance institutions in refusing loans to applicants with a dubious history but would also oblige these institutions to open access to potential creditworthy borrowers who could play a really useful role in reviving economic activities in the country. The opening of MF-CIB, could also have an indirect impact on alleviation of poverty and creation of more employment opportunities. Since the ratio of loan default in micro-finance in Pakistan is usually higher than in conventional lending, the establishment of such a facility in the SBP was of course long overdue. However, while commending the usefulness of MF-CIB, it needs to be kept in view that State Bank, as a matter of policy, should not be so much concerned about equitable distribution of credit or helping the poorer or marginalised sections of society. While assistance to the poor is a noble idea, it is the proper management of fiscal policy which should carry the burden of a welfare regime and ensuing equity, bank credit must be facilitated to flow to business activities which yield the highest returns to ensure its use in an optimal fashion. Also, the situation, at present, demands that the State Bank must continue to concentrate on ensuring price stability and persuading the government to borrow less from the banking system in order to spare more resources for the private sector credit expansion including for the micro-finance sector. Nobody can refute the importance of micro-finance in the country's economy and the need to remove impediments to its free flow but the nation will be served better if the State Bank continues to accord priority to its primary responsibility of reducing inflationary pressures on the economy and checking sub-optimal use of bank credit.

Yoga ? Origin and Background?

Yoga is an age-old science made up of different disciplines of mind and body. It has originated in India 2500 years ago and is still effective in bringing overall health and well being to any person who does it regularly. The word yoga is based upon a Sanskrit verb Yuja. It means to connect, to culminate or to concur. It?s the culmination of mind and body or the culmination of Jiva and Shiva (soul and the universal spirit). It?s also a culmination of Purush and Prakriti (Yin and Yang).

The term Yoga has a very broad scope. There are several schools or systems of Yoga. Dnyanayoga (Yoga through knowledge), Bhaktiyoga (Yoga through devotion), Karmayoga (Yoga through action), Rajayoga (Royal or supreme Yoga) and Hathayoga (Yoga by balancing opposite principles of body). All of these schools of Yoga are not necessarily very different from each other. They are rather like threads of the same cloth, entangled into each other. For thousands of years, Yoga has been looked upon as an effective way of self-improvement and spiritual enlightenment. All these systems essentially have this same purpose; only the ways of achieving it are little different for each of them. In its most popular form, the term Yoga has come to associate with the last of these systems which is Hathayoga. For the purpose of this article too, the term Yoga is used with the same meaning. Although, when it comes to Philosophy of Yoga, which is at the end of this article, the term Yoga will have a broader scope.

Asana and Pranayama

Let?s take a detailed look at the main two components of Hathayoga i.e. Asana and Pranayama.

a) Asana:
Asana means acquiring a body posture and maintaining it as long as one?s body allows. Asana, when done rightly according to the rules discussed above, render enormous physical and psychological benefits. Asana are looked upon as the preliminary step to Pranayama. With the practice of Asana there is a balancing of opposite principles in the body and psyche. It also helps to get rid of inertia. Benefits of Asana are enhanced with longer maintenance of it. Asana should be stable, steady and pleasant.
